Lash Serum Danger

There are a few FDA approved lash serums, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are safe and/or effective.

When I was five-years-old I was told every Sunday by the ladies at church how gorgeous my thick, beautiful, long eyelashes were. I hated hearing that! So much so that one day after church I grabbed a pair of scissors and I cut my upper eyelashes off. I do not recommend it. When I would rub my eyes my now stubby eyelashes would go inside my lower eyelid and poke it. I was a farm kid with hay fever and other airborne allergies so I had to rub my itchy eyes a lot. It was a valuable lesson that I have never forgotten.

Not everyone is blessed with the stunning lashes I had as a five-year-old and those who don’t might find it blasphemous that I would cut them off.

Not everyone is blessed with the stunning lashes I had as a five-year-old and those that aren’t might find it blasphemous that I would cut them off to spite my face, so to speak. Those of you who are unhappy with the lashes that DNA dealt out have some options for making your lashes longer, thicker, and stronger. There are tricks, viral hacks, vitamins, serums and cosmetics designed to do the trick. Unfortunately, most of those either don’t work, look fake, or are simply a façade for real lashes.

One of the options that has pretty impressive results and is growing in popularity is growth factor lash serums that help promote lash growth. There are a few FDA approved lash serums, but that doesn’t mean they are either safe or effective. So choose wisely as the side effects can sometimes be extreme and irreversible.

Choose your lash serum wisely as the side effects can sometimes be extreme and irreversible.

Many years ago it was discovered that a component of a glaucoma drug had an unexpected external benefit that resulted in longer, thicker and stronger eyelashes. Called Prostaglandin analogues (PGAs), this class of drugs was modified to be used as an agent to promote lash growth in the beauty industry. But every yin has a yang, and the side effects of this drug could be irreversible darkening of the iris, darkening of the periorbital skin, periorbital hollowing, and volume loss in the periorbital fat pad.

Recent studies have shown evidence that use of Latisse, a hormone hair growth promoter which uses PGAs to grow lash hair, can result in permanent fat loss around the eyes causing a sunken appearance of the eyes as well as irreversible displacement of the eye. Known as enophthalmos, it literally means that the eyeball is displaced in the orbital socket. Some of these side effects began to occur as early as one month after beginning treatment.

Although Latisse is intended for topical use it stands to reason that it can enter the eye and cause similar changes.
